Medtronic: Conflicts of Interest

Once again, the public gets a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes in the Pharmaceutical Industry.  In a nutshell, Medtronic is being accused of having Hired Guns perform research and then using that research to promote it’s products.  In the spotlight this week is a product called INFUSE.  Infuse is a genetically engineered product that stimulates bone growth.  According to journal articles and news reports researchers downplayed dangerous side effects that began appearing after the drug had been on the market for a while. For a more in depth discussion about Medtronic’s shenanigans, check out the New York Times article by Barry Meier and Duff Wilson.

As you can see in the article, Medtronic has been accused of some pretty dangerous stuff.  The sad fact of the matter is the Pharmaceutical Industry is famous for this type behavior.  Prescription Drug Injury Lawyers know all too well how Big Pharma hides the ball when promoting its drugs.  For instance, it was not that long ago that Merck Pharmaceuticals was caught downplaying the risks of Myocardial Infarction that came with the use of it’s drug VIOXX.  Merck paid dearly but not nearly as dearly as those people who were injured or lost their loved ones due to Merck’s relentless pursuit to increase it’s bottom line.
